5/5/2011 Update: Two years of barhopping

Added since the last update:  Lucky Shamrock (old Augie’s on 20th) and Rozz-Tox in Rock Island; American Legion in East Moline; and Blueport Junction in Davenport.  New total is 386 (click to view). 

Bar news:

·         The new iteration of Cheer’s in Moline, which had been operating under that name, looks like it’s now called Salute on 7th.
 
·         What I originally thought was going to be The Clubhouse (old Northwoods Steakhouse), is actually going to be The Beach House – found that out at the Parrot Head Social. 

·         There’s a new sign above the old Tailgater’s in downtown Moline that indicates it’s becoming Rubikon, and also noticed a club on 5th Ave. called Excalibur, which apparently is open.  Both go on the “What’s Left” list.

·         Word is that Club Fusion has closed, so that comes off the What’s Left list (aw, shucks).  That list still sits at 13, with 3 not open yet.

·         On the awning of the University Club in downtown Moline, they’ve added “Piano Bar”.  This takes further investigation.

·         Even though it has new owners, has been remodeled, and advertises itself as the ‘New’ Rusty Nail, the sign still says Rusty Nail.  I don’t feel right about counting it again if I happen to go there.

Stats:  Two years ago, I started keeping a record not just of the new bars I went to, but all of the bars, and the number of visits.   Although I didn’t know it at the time (I remembered a few over the months, and many others reminded me of more), I started out having been to 230 different Quad Cities bars.  In those two years, I added 156 more, for my current total of 386.  However, I didn’t forget old friends:

(Some of you might be doing the math:  365 days in a year, times 2, naught from naught is naught, carry the naught…Hmmm.  Treatment might be in order.  There were actually 299 days where I didn’t hit a bar, though.)

6/22/2012 Update - 7 more!

Added to my list for this update:  Jimbo’s Knucklehead Saloon in East Moline; Shogun, Front Street Brewery (Freight House location), and Connections, all in Davenport;  the Rock Island location of The Grape Life; and Crust, in Bettendorf.  The 6 bars added to my list represent the most since April 2011, when I knocked 13 down, and would have taken my count to 441, but for some reason I had the Freight House location of the old Funny Bone listed, but not Penguin’s.  Adding that, I’m now at   442 .  Only four were on my What’s Left list, and I added the Barrel House in Moline (see below) and the Grove Tap in Long Grove, which I wasn’t previously aware of.  The What’s Left list goes to 14 , and may go up further depending on what I decide about including Orion, Reynolds, and Blue Grass in what I define as the Quad Cities Area.   Jimbo’s Knucklehead Saloon is the latest iteration of what was Hollywood Dave’s, which then became Brucer’s Dawg ...

1/16/2014 Update:

At long last, the Riverside Grille has opened in Bettendorf, but pretty much too late for college football season.  They opened the Monday before Christmas, and I was in having lunch and a beer a half hour later (hope I didn’t look desperate after originally hearing they would be open around Labor Day).  After seeing the place, I still expect it will put a dent in Sports Fans business – nice size bar, 19 flat screens, good food, even a fireplace.  Only thing odd about it is the layout, doesn’t have much of a flow – a lot of wide openness toward the front.  That won’t bother us; we’ll take our customary seats at the bar. The Smoking Dog Pub opened December 28th in the district of Rock Island, in what until recently was Malarkey’s .  I’d only been in Malarkey’s once (about 4 years ago) and can’t really visualize what it was like, but I’m pretty sure I like this one better.  They added a stage so it’s not necessarily just DJ dance music.  Unusual f...

1/5/2012 Update – Jinx?

I’m beginning to think my blog might be having the same effect as the Madden curse.  After writing in multiple editions about the pending, then actual, opening of the Beach House, four short months later it closes.  Less than two weeks ago I listed the Bierstube in the East Village as one of my top ten favorites, and it closed after New Year’s Eve.  I’m glad I won’t have to wait long for the next iteration – the sign on the door says it will be back open on the 6 th of January, but I don’t know what it will be known as.  The only information I've got is that Katy from McClellan’s Stockade, along with her two sisters, are the new owners.  Best of luck to them, and I hope they keep the escargot! My additions to the list for this update include the Rustic Inn in Eldridge, and Jimmie O’s in west Davenport, which was known up until recently as Carole’s Tap.  If it hadn’t changed ownership and names, I probably would never have gone back there, but it adds to t...
