10/10/2011 Update: Another one slipped by me


Once again I was unaware of a bar that, in this case, has been open for well over a year.  Sharky’s is the latest version of the billiards bar attached to Miller Time Bowl in Davenport.  Now, I need some help – was this separate from Stars And Stripes?  I think that there were two sections of Stars And Stripes back in the day, with the pool hall being one of them, but it may have had a different name.  If so, I’ve been to both so that would add to my total.

Two additions to my list hadn’t even had a chance to make it to my “What’s Left” list:  Refresh in Moline, and 129 in Leclaire.  I really enjoyed 129, which bills it as a coffee and wine bar, though I had no trouble scaring up a Miller Lite while the ladies enjoyed martinis.  Comfortable furniture, nice river views, and there’s a wine rack that you can pick out a bottle for your table.  We’ve already been back again.

Refresh (which opened in the old QCZone) is making an unusual fashion statement, with white cushions on the barstools, couches, and the walls.  The feeling I got was if a couple plasma lights were added, you’d see Austin Powers and Foxy Cleopatra hanging there. 

My other additions include the new location of Café Fresh, and D’Alessandro in Rock Island, bringing the new total to 410.  I struggled a little with counting both Refresh and Café Fresh as they’re attached, but I did belly up at both bars.  Also, there is precedence, with the Arena / 2nd Avenue / RIBCO complex.  Plus, it’s my rules.  It does bring up a question about Rascal’s;  is Rascal’s Live a different bar?  I’ll make that call once I see it open, as usually it’s in the afternoon when we stop at Rascal’s. 

 I haven’t seen any action at Rubikon’s lately, nor anything new on their Facebook page, so I’m not sure when we can see their grand opening.   With the additions of Sharky’s, the “What’s Left” list is at 36.  I also managed to knock Sneaky Pete’s of my “Pre-List” (bars I hadn’t been to since I started tracking, which was 5/1/2009) list.

6/22/2012 Update - 7 more!

Added to my list for this update:  Jimbo’s Knucklehead Saloon in East Moline; Shogun, Front Street Brewery (Freight House location), and Connections, all in Davenport;  the Rock Island location of The Grape Life; and Crust, in Bettendorf.  The 6 bars added to my list represent the most since April 2011, when I knocked 13 down, and would have taken my count to 441, but for some reason I had the Freight House location of the old Funny Bone listed, but not Penguin’s.  Adding that, I’m now at   442 .  Only four were on my What’s Left list, and I added the Barrel House in Moline (see below) and the Grove Tap in Long Grove, which I wasn’t previously aware of.  The What’s Left list goes to 14 , and may go up further depending on what I decide about including Orion, Reynolds, and Blue Grass in what I define as the Quad Cities Area.   Jimbo’s Knucklehead Saloon is the latest iteration of what was Hollywood Dave’s, which then became Brucer’s Dawg House.  Having been to the former DBA’s once

9/27/2014 Update: Buffett Song Bar Trivia

The J Bar in the Holiday Inn in Davenport opened Sep 8, and when we and our friends Dave & Robin (rare thing to have company when I add a new bar to my list) hit it for the first time, it was too busy to sit inside.  The patio was heated and very cool, with a fire feature bisecting it.  Unfortunately it was still too cold to hang around too long, so I went back the next day and sat at the bar.  Good food, unique menu, and a $40,000 argon filled wine cooler.  All very hip, and I think will make a really nice hotel bar, but really very corporate. The Field House (same owners as the original one in downtown Iowa City) occupies what used to be Habaneros in North Park Mall.  This place is Hawkeye heaven with its gold and black décor and 20+ flat screens, and the food is good enough to be a draw even on non-football Saturdays.  They opened 9/2, but I didn’t even notice it until over a week later. 1/5/2012 Update – Jinx?

I’m beginning to think my blog might be having the same effect as the Madden curse.  After writing in multiple editions about the pending, then actual, opening of the Beach House, four short months later it closes.  Less than two weeks ago I listed the Bierstube in the East Village as one of my top ten favorites, and it closed after New Year’s Eve.  I’m glad I won’t have to wait long for the next iteration – the sign on the door says it will be back open on the 6 th of January, but I don’t know what it will be known as.  The only information I've got is that Katy from McClellan’s Stockade, along with her two sisters, are the new owners.  Best of luck to them, and I hope they keep the escargot! My additions to the list for this update include the Rustic Inn in Eldridge, and Jimmie O’s in west Davenport, which was known up until recently as Carole’s Tap.  If it hadn’t changed ownership and names, I probably would never have gone back there, but it adds to the total.  I’m now at 419
