5/29/2012 Update – 3 Years In!



As of April 30, I’ve been chronicling the bars I’ve gone to in the Quad Cities for three years, and almost two years through this forum.  As that date approached I was hustling, trying to attain my goals of 300 bars in three years and 450 overall.  The first goal I accomplished, by hitting the Rusty Nail, The Torchlight, and The Triangle in the final days, but I fell woefully short of the other at 431.
 
I thought about (semi) retirement, or at least a little rest.  After all, during that time I visited 300 bars, a total of 1429 times.  I also went to 111 bars not in the Quad Cities, a total of 161 times.  That adds up to 1590 times at the pub.  Let’s see… 365 days in a year, plus 1 for Leap Year:  that’s 1590 in 1096 days.  So I thought maybe a little break might be a good thing. 

But…

4 Play in the District of Rock Island and the second Bent River Brewery location (also in Rock Island) opened, and now I’m at 433.  Due to open any day is the Freight House location for Front Street Brewery, which is one of the 14 on my What’s Left list.  With 67 to go, I’ll be hitting golf courses, restaurants, bowling alleys – pretty much anything where I can belly up and buy a Miller Lite, to reach my new goal of 500 by the end of the year.

Okay, maybe I’ll stretch this out to 4 years.

I’ve updated my Favorite Bartenders list with the addition of Destiney – hadn’t seen her for years; then she waited on us at Belgrade on Wednesday and Torchlight on Saturday.  I think she may be the only bartender to have waited on us at five different places (Poor Boy’s, QC Hammertime, and Cabana’s were the others).

Not much else of note to report; the old Double Deuce on 4th St in Davenport looks like it’s remodeling, but looking more like office space – I said the same thing about 4 Play in the district, though.

Out of the 300 bars I’ve been to in the QCA over the last three years, there are only 51 that I’ve been to more than three times, and 184 that I’ve only been to once.  Here’s a list of the 20 bars I’ve been to the most last three years:

6/22/2012 Update - 7 more!

Added to my list for this update:  Jimbo’s Knucklehead Saloon in East Moline; Shogun, Front Street Brewery (Freight House location), and Connections, all in Davenport;  the Rock Island location of The Grape Life; and Crust, in Bettendorf.  The 6 bars added to my list represent the most since April 2011, when I knocked 13 down, and would have taken my count to 441, but for some reason I had the Freight House location of the old Funny Bone listed, but not Penguin’s.  Adding that, I’m now at   442 .  Only four were on my What’s Left list, and I added the Barrel House in Moline (see below) and the Grove Tap in Long Grove, which I wasn’t previously aware of.  The What’s Left list goes to 14 , and may go up further depending on what I decide about including Orion, Reynolds, and Blue Grass in what I define as the Quad Cities Area.   Jimbo’s Knucklehead Saloon is the latest iteration of what was Hollywood Dave’s, which then became Brucer’s Dawg House.  Having been to the former DBA’s once

9/27/2014 Update: Buffett Song Bar Trivia

The J Bar in the Holiday Inn in Davenport opened Sep 8, and when we and our friends Dave & Robin (rare thing to have company when I add a new bar to my list) hit it for the first time, it was too busy to sit inside.  The patio was heated and very cool, with a fire feature bisecting it.  Unfortunately it was still too cold to hang around too long, so I went back the next day and sat at the bar.  Good food, unique menu, and a $40,000 argon filled wine cooler.  All very hip, and I think will make a really nice hotel bar, but really very corporate. The Field House (same owners as the original one in downtown Iowa City) occupies what used to be Habaneros in North Park Mall.  This place is Hawkeye heaven with its gold and black décor and 20+ flat screens, and the food is good enough to be a draw even on non-football Saturdays.  They opened 9/2, but I didn’t even notice it until over a week later. 1/5/2012 Update – Jinx?

I’m beginning to think my blog might be having the same effect as the Madden curse.  After writing in multiple editions about the pending, then actual, opening of the Beach House, four short months later it closes.  Less than two weeks ago I listed the Bierstube in the East Village as one of my top ten favorites, and it closed after New Year’s Eve.  I’m glad I won’t have to wait long for the next iteration – the sign on the door says it will be back open on the 6 th of January, but I don’t know what it will be known as.  The only information I've got is that Katy from McClellan’s Stockade, along with her two sisters, are the new owners.  Best of luck to them, and I hope they keep the escargot! My additions to the list for this update include the Rustic Inn in Eldridge, and Jimmie O’s in west Davenport, which was known up until recently as Carole’s Tap.  If it hadn’t changed ownership and names, I probably would never have gone back there, but it adds to the total.  I’m now at 419
