05/3/2013 Update: Stats
Lemongrass Café was my only addition
since the last post, bringing my total to 483,
but prospects are looking good for a late May
– early June spike.
In downtown Moline, Funky Desi
opened in the same spot the last Indian (India Rasoi) restaurant failed, but
the new owner has an advantage in that he owns the building. When I noticed it
was open, I paid a visit – adequate food, nice long 20 stool bar. Unfortunately
no liquor license as of this post, so a return trip is in order. Right around
the corner, Big Shots Sports Bar will be taking the place of the short-lived
Rubikon. Construction is proceeding at Pub 1848 and Barrel House, and both look
as though they may be open within 30 days. The Plaza Pub, however, appears to
be content to wait for ice skating season again before they open.
Across the river, banners went up at the old Club Fusion: ‘Club Privileged’ will be the name of what they’re describing as a Dance Club – Bar – Lounge.
With the additions of Club
Privileged, Big Shots, and Funky Desi, my “What’s Left” list goes to … 12? In another random manipulation of the
numbers, I took private / semi private clubs like American Legions and VFW’s
off the list. I don’t know which of these I can just walk into without a key
card, or which I need to know someone to get in. Of course, they’ll still count
if I do stop in.
Last post, I wrote about ‘Non’ Bars
– bars that are (to most, but not me), not the main reason people visit. Mostly
this consists of restaurants, but also can include golf courses, bowling
alleys, ball parks, casinos… you get the picture. I listed the Tiki Bar at
Modern Woodmen as my favorite non destination bar, but I was concerned to see
as I was crossing Centennial Bridge that it looks like it may have become a
casualty of the new attractions that are being planned for the stadium, in the
form of zip lines and Ferris wheels. This makes me sad, but maybe they’ll
reposition it.
I also neglected to mention Duck
City Bistro, because in my mind, it is a destination bar. Pretty sure most will
not share that view, however, so they should have been included. With one of my Hall of Fame
bartenders in Nam, the tremendous hospitality always shown by Jeremy and
Charles, and shrimp so big you have to keep rearranging them equidistantly from
each other so the martini glass they’re served in doesn’t topple over, they
would take a place right at the top of the list.
April 30th marks 4 years of bar tracking. Though I fell 18
shy of my goal of 500 different Quad Cities bars by that time, it wasn’t because
I didn’t do the work. Here are a few Stats:

Hmm. It’s On The River was on top on Year 4, even though it
was closed almost half of the year. Though I’ve posted a lot of Top Ten lists,
I haven’t really listed my favorite overall bars. This probably gives it away.
